Birds

In the UK, birds are a major problem, especially in urban and rural areas where some species are common and cause annoyances. Because they can harm property, endanger human health, and interfere with daily activities, birds like pigeons, seagulls, and starlings are sometimes regarded as pests. Preferred conditions: Birds visit places where there is a lot of food waste, trash, or intentional feeding by city dwellers, grain spills, unharvested crops, or animal fodder, fish or scraps from humans. They often build nests in secure nesting locations such as building ledges, bridges, and rooftops. Silos, barns, and dense hedgerows are natural habitats for gulls and other birds.

Health risks: Humans can contract infections including salmonella, cryptococcosis, and psittacosis (parrot fever) from birds, especially pigeons, by direct touch or droppings. Additionally acidic, pigeon droppings have the potential to gradually erode sculptures and buildings.
Property damage: Because they nest in rooftops, chimneys, and gutters, pigeons and other birds can seriously harm buildings. Their nesting materials can obstruct drainage systems, and their droppings can discolour and harm building facades.
Other challenges: Large bird populations can cause issues with noise, mess, and stench, especially in public areas, business buildings, and urban areas. The legislation protects all wild birds, eggs, and nests, and violations can result in severe consequences. So, it is not advised that locals try managing birds on their own.

In the UK, bird pests can pose serious problems for the environment, property, and human health. Additionally, The Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 in the United Kingdom protects a number of bird species, making it unlawful to damage them or their nests without the required permits. However, under certain circumstances, some pest species, such as feral pigeons, can be managed. To ensure legal compliance, always seek advice from a local council or a qualified pest controller.
